Open Doors: the spirit of adoption

“…but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”    — Romans 8:15

For years, Little and I have felt that The Lord would eventually lead us to adopt children in need of a family. We have even worked to prepare our own kids and involve them in the process. For me, adoption is so personal because I have four adopted siblings (I am oldest in a family of eight kids). On a more biblical and spiritual level, adoption is the way Paul describes our relationship with God in Romans 8. He says the relationship we have with God, in Christ Jesus, by the Spirit enables us to call Him father, daddy, papa. He brings us out of darkness and into light. He not only saves us, but He gives us life. He takes those of us who were “enemies" and calls us sons and daughters. In a word, he describes that transition as “adoption." In his incarnation, Christ was adopted by Joseph. So we have the clearest picture of how God sees us — our relationship to Him through the adoption process — and the relationship it provides.

The Lord now has began to open doors for us to pursue, actively, an international adoption. We are excited to see where the Lord takes us on this journey and how He is going to grow our family, not only numerically but spiritually. We are focused on two little boys in Uganda, ages 4 and 5, who are biological brothers. They are currently living in an orphanage in Uganda. This whole process has been fairly quiet and slow until the past week, when we got the call that a group of young boys were referred to the agency with which we are working.

We will need to raise between $25,000 and $30,000, but we trust the Lord to provide for the calling He has given us. We do not have the money, but we are confident that God is not rattled by our personal financial needs in this. A lot of you have already contacted us about how you can help financially. We hope you will follow and support us on this journey, and I will be writing a lot about it over the next few months. Our next big financial obligation is about six days out. It’s going to be sweet to see how it happens.
