Be Strong — Part 1

The 2012 Be Strong Conference was the most well-attended men’s event we have ever done. I want to share some of the highlights over the next few days. All of the main sessions are available on Snowbird’s podcast.

One of the goals of the conference was to motivate men to just be and do what God has plainly called them to. We weren’t trying to do anything “abnormal” or radical. With that as a goal, we wanted to be challenging but also extremely practical. In achieving practicality, during Session One we looked at some examples from scripture of men who fought to be the men God wanted them to be. This requires a maniacal abandonment of societies’ parameters and rules. God doesn’t expect us to conform to social culture, rather he calls us to conform to Christ.

For us, these conferences and the challenges they bring are a welcome relief from the constant of student ministry. As we labor to disciple young people, the largest obstacle we face is a lack of leadership in their homes, churches and lives. We really are passionate about getting to challenge the would-be leaders of the church and families.

We love to see men realize and embrace the call of God on their lives in this generation.

JUST LEAD.

Stay faithful — a word from Kilby

The other day, Tucker (my brother) had a football game. He was so hopeful and pumped up for the game. The only score made the entire game was from Tucker! The opposing team — Murphy — had double. But even after the game… I knew: Tucker was just happy that he was the One — the scorer (if that is a word).

And I don’t care that he lost. I know that he is happy. Tucker and me are close, and I know what that touchdown meant to him.

We are so awful at this: We say we are Christians, but when there is a trial, what do we do? What needs to happen is you love and serve Christ faithfully.
When you are in trials, or are the only one, still pursue hard after Christ! He will not “shun” you. You are His creation — He adores you. WOW! Just think, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer and the Satisfier loves you so much! What an amazing gift and honor. Don’t blow it!

Make WAR

Purity Retreat from Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters on Vimeo.

We are excited to promote the SWO13 Purity Conference, “Make War, Not Love- A Violent Fight for Purity.” Plan to attend and register soon. Last year’s event sold out and this one is filling up fast.

The focus this year is from 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 — “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you – unless you believed in vain.”

The trend in purity events over the past twenty years has been centered around the commitments people make. The goal is worthy, but the focus must be the Gospel. Scripture is clear that our lives are defined by CHRIST’S righteousness; and the holiness we live in is by Him and for Him.

Our goal in this conference will be to drive students deeper into the truth of the Gospel and to point them toward the realization of purity through the power of the Gospel, not because they have the strength or the pressure to “commit” to purity. Christ is already committed to it. He is in me. That is the hope of glory. That is the hope of the Gospel. That is the hope for pure lives.

See you in February.

Gearing up for SWO13

Summer 2012 from Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters on Vimeo.

I wanted to let everyone know that the new 2013 SWO Summer Camp promo video is up and ready to watch. Check it out and let us know what you think. We are already gearing up for different 2013 events and spending a lot of time focusing on the summer program. We saw more than 200 churches come through this past summer, bringing almost 4,500 students to SWO.

We are excited to plan and prepare for another great year. Enjoy the new video!

Act Like Men. Be Strong.

I want to remind everyone that there are some conferences coming up at SWO that we are really getting excited about. The “Be Strong” men’s conference is just around the corner. If you haven’t registered yet, there are only a handful of spots available.

If you are unable to come, please pray for the men that God will lead here for the conference. We are excited to challenge them to be the men God has called them to be. There is no doubt that the greatest gap and need in our society and in the church has been left by men. Men who are not accepting the call and responsibility that God intends for them and that their families need from them.

Our goal is to confront these areas and to call men to see the scriptural calling God has for them. This is an exciting opportunity, and we look forward to it each year. God has done great things through these conferences through the years, and we have great expectations for 2012.

Welcoming New Staff

Every August, we welcome a new group of interns at Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters. These men and women carry a huge part of the responsibility in ministering to students who come here during the school years for conferences and retreats. SWO interns are valuable ministry partners who come here under a calling from God and are looking for an opportunity to serve for at least one year. Over the last few days we have been doing rec training with this group that will be calling SWO home for the next year.

We have already seen God do great things through this bunch for the Gospel. Last week we kicked off our back-to-school season with a group of students from Westminister Christian Academy in Athens, Ga. The interns did a great job leading small groups and running their first river trip of the season.

Please pray for the SWO intern team as they minister to students from all over the country, and as they travel all over the world this year with SWO, pointing people to Christ.

Fools for Christ’s Sake

1 Corinthians 4:10 — “We are fools for Christ’s sake…”

I have gotten some funny comments over the “What is the Gospel?” video that was put out for the upcoming Solid Rock Revival. I have had people tell me that I look crazy! I couldn’t help but think of Paul’s words to the Corinthian church. If he was out of his mind, it was for the sake of the Gospel!

That particular video was, actually, pretty unscripted. When the film crew set up the basement scene, they asked me to have a seat in the chair and to answer the questions they would ask. The first question was “What is the Gospel to you?” You can hear it pretty good in the video. My response was just reactionary. I do think that one of the problems in the Church in America is that we try to negotiate the Gospel and the terms of our Christianity.

Christ makes demands that are not negotiable. The Kingdom of God is NOT a democracy.
